About – SCCM Consultant – SCCM Engineer

Hello! My name is Richard Balsley, and I’m a Premier Field Engineer (PFE) for Microsoft working on the System Center Configuration Manager product. Most of the content you’ll find here on my blog will refer to how to do certain things with Configuration Manager, however you may find a few posts on other topics I find worth sharing.

Microsoft – Premier Field Engineer – SMS/SCCM/Forefront Endpoint Protection (FEP 2010)

June 2010 – Present

Responsibilities

  • Served as a trusted advisor to Microsoft Premier customers for the System Center Configuration Manager and Systems Management Server products
  • Delivered custom training for utilization of many features around SCCM and SMS
  • Provided customized solutions to solve complex business problems
  • Provided guidance to customers around Windows XP to Windows 7 migrations using SCCM, Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT), and User State Migration Tool (USMT)
  • Provided infrastructure and design guidance for setting up and maintaining SCCM environments
  • Provided Risk Assessment and remediation guidance for SCCM infrastructures
  • Provided best practice guidance on setting up and maintaining a solid patching solution using SCCM
  • Provided guidance on creating custom reports utilizing the SCCM DB using custom SQL queries and SQL Reporting Services
  • Provided guidance on creating Desired Configuration Management (DCM) baselines to help maintain desired configurations across servers
  • Provided guidance to customers around Windows XP to Windows 7 migrations using SCCM, Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT), and User State Migration Tool (USMT)
  • Obtained 100% satisfied customers based on customer satisfaction surveys

Verisign – Team Lead – SCCM/Desktop Platform Team

January 2010 – June 2010

Responsibilities:

  • Performed Verisign’s SMS 2003 to SCCM 2007 SP2 R2 migration. This included migrating ~2500 nodes as well as re-architecting the SCCM hierarchy migration (side-by-side migration)
  • Implemented new patching standardization and procedures utilizing Software Updates Management (SUM), replacing the Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU) process used in SMS 2003
  • Setup and configured SCCM Operating System Deployment (OSD) for Windows XP and Windows 7, this also included managing all task sequences/images for the different HALs on XP as well as Windows 7
  • Developed and executed on enterprise workstation imaging / deployment methodology for Windows XP and Windows 7
  • Developed and executed on application patching utilizing System Center Updates Publisher 4.5 for security patching non-Microsoft applications
  • Trained and developed Verisign employees to understand the differences between SMS 2003 and SCCM 2007 and implemented more efficient processes and procedures to ensure the highest level of software saturation
  • Oversaw group policy and reviewed existing polices and proposed changes to increase performance and efficiency
  • Created customized reports utilizing SQL/SQL Reporting services to help assist on making better business decisions
  • Monitored SCCM platform health and mitigated issues as needed
  • Customized packaging for software installations using AdminStudio, Wise, Powershell, and VBScript

Chevron – Technical Team Lead – SMS/SCCM

September 2005 to January 2010

Responsibilities:

  • Managed an SCCM infrastructure of 250 SCCM servers in over 180 countries with a client count of over 100,000 machines and over 5000 packages. This included design work for sites in very slow link regions (< 56K in some instances)
  • Project manager for the SMS 2003 to SCCM 2007 product upgrade. This involved working with Microsoft in their Technical Adoption Program (TAP) for SCCM 2007 and providing feedback to enhance product improvements. This also involved managing our SQL 2000 to 2005 upgrade as well as installing WSUS 3.0 for use with software updates management
  • Chief architect of an internal tool for monitoring SCCM client health and fixing broken clients. This tool helped identify many issues related to Software Updates Scanning, Hardware Inventory, WMI, and more
  • Managed custom hardware inventory collection process to capture non-standard items to make better business decisions
  • Managed Windows Deployment Services infrastructure to allow for network installations of operating systems. This project is currently migrating towards Operating System Deployment in SCCM 2007
  • Designed hardware standard for all SCCM servers across the company
  • Developed powershell scripts to capture logs and registry settings for broken SCCM clients to investigate problem issues
  • Managed on-call process using internal tools as well as MOM 2005 and SCOM 2007 R2
  • Assisted support teams on packaging and release management best practices
  • Developed process to patch and support nearly 80,000 clients using Software Updates Management in SCCM
  • Coordinated new server deployments with IT administrators across various regions
  • Documented processes and procedures in an effort to enhance efficiency across the team. Updated old documentation to be more in-line with new versions of operating system and processes
  • Trained new employees and contractor(s) on Chevron policies and policies specific to the SDI team

Sacramento County Department of Finance

IT Analyst – MS Technologies

Responsibilities:

  • Spearheaded the initiative to migrate from Windows 2000 to XP
  • Used managed network solutions to deploy software to more than 300 employees using Microsoft’s group policy and Remote Installation Services (RIS).
  • Created custom installation packages of pre-installed software to allow for software to be deployed using group policies
  • Packaged software using Wise Package Studio to create custom transform files in order to deploy software with settings specified by upper-management.
  • Deployed packaged software using Microsoft SMS 2003 SP1
  • Assisted county employees with troublesome computers and servers
